The Sky is the Limit
You can do anything and be anything you want to be. There is no hurry, no worry at Victoria's Place
Who We Are
We are parents, we are a community, and we are family.
Victoria’s Place is here to help serve children with Down Syndrome, we are based in Columbia, SC. Our goal is to help make this world a better place for children with Down Syndrome through the programs we offer.
We believe in giving children with Down Syndrome a chance to express themselves by giving them a positive outlet through activities such as Art, Music, Sports, Help with Motor Skills, and Reading.
Program Services
01.
— Arts
Developing eye-hand coordination will allow children with Down Syndrome to express their
creativity, improve visual awareness, and enhance self-confidence. The finished artwork of each child
will be displayed. Volunteer Art instructors will work with each individual child.
02.
— Music
One of the most effective forms of therapy for children with Down Syndrome is music. Studies show
that music lessons truly help special needs children with proper development. It improves memory,
hand eye coordination, cognitive skills, social development, self-esteem, and more.
03.
— Sports
Children with Down Syndrome are often encouraged to participate in sports at a young age to help
build muscle tone which can be naturally lower in people with Down Syndrome. Physical activity through
sports provides substantive benefits to your child. Breaking a certain sport into different parts makes it
easier for a child with Down Syndrome to learn the various aspects of a certain sport. This technique,
along with modifying the equipment, will allow them to grasp it eventually as a whole.
04.
— Fine Motor Skills
Because of certain physical characteristics which include hypotonia (low muscle tone) and
ligamentous laxity (looseness of ligaments) that causes increased flexibility in joints and decreased
strength, children with Down Syndrome do not develop motor skills in the same way typically a
developing child does. Creative activities using the small muscle groups such as building with Lego, the
use of clays, and Play-Doh’s will greatly improve their muscles and fine motor skills.
05.
— Reading
Reading will help children with Down Syndrome develop vocabulary and grammar knowledge and
will give added practice towards improving spoken language skills. Reading practice will also help
develop working memory skills. At Victoria Place, reading activities will be a fun activity designed to
captivate your child’s imagination and interests in reading. These reading games and activities are
effective and enjoyable ways of improving their understanding and use of spoken language.
